Sage X3 has the concept of external (freight) containers where one can define the max weight and useable volume. Their is functionality built into the buyers workbench where you can specify a container (ex: 40') and then add in lines order suggestion lines and the system will give you visibility of the weight/volume of the cargo versus the max weight / usable volume. This assists the purchasing manager in filling out the container. From a cost accounting perspective this is important in that this allows for the freight charges to be minimized because it spreads the costs over the max number of units. It would be helpful if this container management concept was extended to the Preparation Plan Management function. This function already allows the warehouse manager to setup a preparation plan based on carrier and route number. If the container concept was also included then sales order lines could be selected until the the container was maxed out (weight/volume). Thus the organizations outbound freight costs would be minimized and they would be getting the optimal use of their trucks.
